HP Fanfic I've Been Reading - A Review
Hello, f-list! *waves*

I think I said something here about acquiring a Kindle on Christmas and that now I had much more time to read fanfiction again. Well, Kindle is really wonderful, but it makes me a lazy reviewer. For a while now, I've been meaning to review what I've been reading, and it shouldn't be so hard, really; I've been concentrating my reading on specific authors, mostly. But instead of going back to every story and reviewing, I find myself writing this post. You might take this as a rec post, if you like. It can also be a sort of review post.

Anyway, since late December, I've been reading aurette and coffeeonthepatio, mainly, but also Arsinoe de Blassenville, RedValkyrie, Hannah-1888, kayly silverstorm, cathedralcarver, linlawless, and shefa. If you haven't had the opportunity to read their work, I highly recommend you do, and if you're looking for something more specific about my thoughts on their work before deciding, you may read along.

Before I start with the list of stories, if you take a look at the list you'll quickly learn that I've become a huge fan of coffeeonthepatio's work. Since I found her profile on fanfiction.net, I've been devouring her work. The same can be said about aurette's work, which I haven't had the time to read before now.

With that said, in alphabetical order (as Kindle organizes them), the stories I've read this year, so far...

>>> Acquittal by coffeeonthepatio, told in 68 chapters.
Author's summary: Snape, known evil git, is teaching at Hogwarts again when Hermione, Gryffindor Princess and girlfriend of Ron Weasley, returns to finish her 7th year. Feeling alone, she seeks solace somewhere only one other person knows about. ::canon except epilogue.::

Acquittal is one of those "Hermione goes back to take her NEWTs" fic. It's SS/HG and canon-compliant except for the epilogue and, well, Severus' death. It has all the great elements we expect from the genre: Hermione and Severus working on a potion together, Hermione becoming a friend to Severus, slow-building romance, the rescue of Hermione's parents, Harry becoming an acquaintance of Severus, etc... And although we can find all those well-known elements in the story, it's still very refreshing and original. It has its twists, and my favorite part about coffeeonthepatio's writing, it has amazing characterization. On this fic, I'll bring forward her excellent work with Aberforth Dumbledore and Minerva McGonnagal. Also a mark of her work is the excellent insertions of original characters. On this fic, she brings us Dorothy, or simply Dotty, who's Rosmerta's Squib niece. Truly amazing characters, and Snape and Hermione are simply perfect in the fic. It also has great places we haven't seen at Hogwarts before, like a (sort of) hidden garden. I really loved it!

>>> The Best Revenge by Arsinoe de Blassenville, told in 47 chapters.
Author's summary: AU. Yes, the old Snape retrieves Harry from the Dursleys formula. I just had to write one. Everything changes, because the best revenge is living well. T for Mentor Snape's occasional naughty language. Supportive Minerva.

I've been known to read such fics now and then. As it's usually the case, Severus is a bit on the OOC side, but not overly so. It retells Harry's first year, and due to Snape's intervention in Harry's home life, a lot of it changes. Let's just say that the trio is not in the same House, and that we see more of the Malfoys on this fic. Dumbledore is still the same, though. *lol* All the other elements of Harry's first year are on the fic. It's a good read, and I recommend this fic to those who like the genre.

>>> Cleaning Cauldrons by RedValkyrie, told in 1 chapter.
Author's summary: He feels a fool, of course. That he should love her, but she made it so easy to do so, slipping into his bruised and weary heart and forcing him, forcing him to feel these things again. It was a poor joke on fate's behalf...

It's a well-written one-shot. I like when Severus tries to resist his feelings for Hermione, who in this fic is his Apprentice. We can see his struggle here, through RedValkyrie's words. It ends... smut-ly. *lol* It's a good fic.

>>> Conversations on a Broom by Aurette or aurette, told in 1 chapter.
Author's summary: A conversation between colleagues while riding on a broom. Rated M for subject matter only. One-shot. SS/HG Epilogue? I ripped mine out of the book so it doesn't exist anymore.

I like Aurette's sense of humor, and this story has it. :0) Both Aurors, Severus gets Hermione on a broom with him. *smirks* It has witty dialogue. It also has intimate dialogue. In summary, it has great dialogue! *lol*

>>> From the Corner by coffeeonthepatio, told in 66 chapters.
Author's summary: While Hermione, seeing her marriage is at a dead-end, moves back to her parents with Rose and Hugo, Snape finds he is no longer alone in his apothecary in Knockturn Alley - her name is Ophelia and she's four. And Ophelia's his.

This one is quite canon and quite brilliant. It has, again, coffeeonthepatio's mark through her original characters, in this case Snape's daughter Ophelia and the old lady Mary Kelly. It has also great characterization of little-known canon characters such as Hermione's parents and Hugo and Rose. I fell in love with her Snape in this fic. He's such a great man, even though he's still rude and gray. He has such a great potential for love, and throughout the story, he has many opportunities of exercising said potential. The children show up a lot in the fic, and they're great, but my opinion on that aspect might be a bit tainted. I do love seeing Snape with kids. ;0) Anyway, it's a family fic. I luuuuuurved it! <3 <3

From the Corner at Easter and From the Corner: Christmas in Knockturn Alley are spin-offs of the main fic, and they show Snape, Hermione and the kids in the future, if you take From the Corner's timeline as base. The Easter one is very insightful. <3

>>> King of Swords by machshefa or shefa, told in 22 chapters.
Author's summary: It was only after Snape followed her into the neglected shop, moving furtively between the shafts of sunlight that pierced the gloom, that it occurred to him to wonder why, ten years after the Battle of Hogwarts, Hermione Granger was running. And why, in a world with magic, real magic, she should be seeking the counsel of a Muggle Tarot reader.

Machshefa's work is brilliant, as you all must know already. King of Swords has a lot of what makes a fic Machshefa's, like psychological growth, real relationships and amazing magic. Severus and Hermione work together to survive and bring back what the war has stolen from them. It's a journey of feelings and a communion with the nature through their magic. Amazing fic. It's a must-read. Enough said. *lol*

>>> A Kiss at Midnight by linlawless, told in 1 chapter.
Author's summary: When their friends drag them to the Ministry's New Year's Eve ball, will Hermione and Severus find themselves together as the clock chimes twelve?

This one was a rec somewhere. It's the typical ball fic, blind dates and all. Severus and Hermione go to the Ministry's New Year ball with arranged dates but end up sweetly together. It suited my hunger for fluff. :0)

>>> Lavender's Truth by Aurette or aurette, told in 1 chapter.
Author's summary: Hermione's self-imposed distance from her friends comes to an end when Ron asks for help. When they realise The Golden Trio aren't enough to solve a mystery, Hermione hires a pro. Epilogue free, for your pleasure.

Snape's a privet detective on this one. Have I said that Aurette has a great sense of humor already? *lol* Well, she does, and it shows up again in this story. It has a mystery to be uncovered, and Hermione gets to know Severus in the process. I enjoyed the reading. :0)

>>> The Master Spy by Aurette or aurette, told in 13 chapters.
Author's summary: When misfortune befalls Professor Granger, the reclusive hero, Severus Snape, is called on to ride to her rescue. All in a day's work for the Master Spy. However, things are not always as they seem.

I think this is one of my favorites from Aurette. Snape believes he's a coward, and when his fellow professor Hermione Granger is kidnapped, to his horror, all defer to him to save her. It's hilarious. I luuuuurved it a lot. You should read it. Now! *lol*

>>> Pack Clouds Away and The Land of Might Have Been by Hannah-1888, both told in 1 chapter.
Author's summaries:
For Pack Clouds Away... Hermione reconciles her loneliness at Christmas with the help of her favourite book and a healthy dose of whimsy. SS/HG fluff.
For The Land of Might Have Been... Sequel to 'Pack Clouds Away,' in which Severus comes to see his love of reading might mean a little more than he thought. SS/HG

I need my fluff dose, people. These two fics have Snape and Hermione both as professors at Hogwarts. When Hermione forgets a book in the staff room, Severus is curious and reads it. They get to know each other through their love for books. She loves Romance Novels, and he loves Thrillers and Mystery books. They start an exclusive book club, just for the two of them. In the sequel, they take their friendship to the next level. It's what one can expect from a good fluff. *sighs happily*

>>> The Safe House, Safe Conduct and Safe Harbor, a.k.a. the Safe series by Aurette or aurette, all three one-shots.
Author's summaries:
For The Safe House... A frustrated Hermione gets whisked away from Grimmauld Place in an emergency by her potions Professor. Hour after hour holed up in one room can take it's toll. Ignored DH and large chunks of HBP and anything else that got in the way.
For Safe Conduct... Continuing what The Safe House started. Hermione contemplates what she wants to transmit, while Severus ruminates on the nature of kisses. As always, completely ignores DH and large chunks of anything else that got in my way.
For Safe Harbor... #3 of the 'Safe' series sees our beloved characters in the midst of the Final Battle. Will they both survive? Will they tell each other how they feel? Will Severus Drop Trou? We finally earn our 'M' rating! Many Canon facts were killed. sry. not.

Well, I like this series because who doesn't like to read what happens when Severus and Hermione are forced to stay together for hours and hours? *lol* When they believe Grimmauld Place is no longer safe, they go to a safe house and wait for further instructions. While they wait... they get drunk! *lol* That's really convenient, if you ask me. :0P And then a class starts--one about how to get Hermione laid. They get out of the safe house after only a kiss, though. But that's why we need two more fics, right? *lol* The plot thickens, and it takes us to war and back to love (and smut). It's an engaging reading. :0)

>>> Semantics by coffeeonthepatio, told in 100 chapters.
Author's summary: -Hand over your wand. It is to be snapped and you're exiled from the Wizarding World from this day onward.- Severus has to deal with his life without magic. A story about Mugglishness, well-meaning neighbours, well-meaning students and Linguistics.

This is such a great fic, in so many dimensions that it's hard for me to start to tell you why it's so great. Really, it's much more than a Muggle!Snape story. He's back to Spinner's End, and his neighbor, an old lady called Eleanor, and she changes Severus. It's truly amazing to watch him overcome all his traumas and become a man capable of happiness. Yes, Hermione is in it. The title of the fic is due to Severus' new found love for Semantics. It's when he starts to heal. As I said, it's really difficult for me to explain why this fanfic is so great, but it truly is. I should mention that the Malfoys, specially Draco, become a secondary plot worth a fic of their own. It is a must-read. One of the best fics I've ever read. Go read! :0)

>>> Side Effects by Aurette or aurette, told in 2 chapters.
Author's summary: A bit of fluffy smut in two chapters. Hermione has a phobia and help comes from an unexpected source. But what happens after? SS/HG. M for reasons.

This one is hilarious! Hermione is afraid of needles. Really afraid of needles. And who does she meet in the waiting room? Yes, Severus Snape. He is quite uncharacteristic supportive without getting out of character. My hat is out to Aurette for that. Also, presumed side-effects from the shot get them in a very intimate situation. It's cute, hawt, fluff. It's the whole package. I loved it!

>>> Unrequited by coffeeonthepatio, told in 1 chapter.
Author's summary: Unrequited love is love that is not openly reciprocated or understood as such, even though reciprocation is usually deeply desired. The beloved may or may not be aware of the admirer's deep affections. HGSS with a hint of hope.

It's a bitter-sweet tale. Severus is in love with Hermione, but she's married to Ron. He tries to avoid meeting her at all cost, trying to get over her. Until Hermione comes to teach at Hogwarts. It has an open end.

>>> When A Lioness Fights by Kayly Silverstorm. told in 80 chapters.
Author's summary: Hermione Granger, master spy, and Severus Snape, spymaster to the Order. An unlikely partnership, forged to defeat the Dark Lord on his own ground. But to do so, they must confront their own darkness within. Spying, torture, angst and love. AU after fifth-year.

This one is a classic that I hadn't read yet. It's a heavy reading, but a worthy one. Hermione is such a strong woman in this fic, and she goes through so much to make her life meaningful to the Order, and to the war effort, that it pains to read. At least she comes to have in Snape a partner. Their relationship is much more complex than that, but I won't try to explain further. It's a good read if you're not weak on the stomach. The plot is full of twists. Great!

>>> When I Cursed the Teacher by Cathedral Carver or cathedralcarver, told in 1 chapter.
Author's summary: The gods' most savage curses come upon us as answers to our own prayers, you know. Written for the 2010 SS/HG Exchange.

I've read this during the sshg_exchange, but I re-read it now. It's such a funny tale. *lol* I loved how his intentions of wooing her were received with such a shock. It's worth the re-read. :0)

That's it, for now. Thank you, amazing authors, for sharing your talent with the world and making me a happy fangirl.

I'll be reading Of Muggles and Magic by Aurette, next. I'll probably come back to tell. *lol*

Oooh... How does one upload fanfic to one's kindle?!
ferporcelferporcel on May 30th, 2011 03:09 am (UTC)
I use Fanfiction Downloader to get the fanfic from fanfiction.net and choose the output to .mobi, then I upload it to my Kindle through the USB cable.

Here's a link to download the software: http://www.fanfictiondownloader.net/

You can also use this website: http://storymaster.the-code-monkey.com/#Home

or that "widget" for Firefox (it's a full add-on on Google Chrome): http://www.klip.me/sendtokindle/

That last one is very handy for websites like TPP or OWL.

I'm so happy to know you're still reading fanfic, Fer. And I'm ashamed to say I haven't read ANY of these fics, save King of Swords, so I clearly have some good reading in my future.
ferporcelferporcel on May 31st, 2011 12:07 am (UTC)
Of course I'm still reading fanfic! I don't think I'll ever tire of it. I read actual books, but it's not the same.

You should really, really read something by coffeeonthepatio. I think you'll enjoy it a lot. I don't know why her work is not widely known amongst us, because she's truly amazing.

By the way, I'll add your WIP to my to-read list when you finish it. :0)

Hi, Droxy! *waves*

I know that my taste in fics is too fluffy for you, but I think you'd like "When A Lioness Fights", if you haven't read it yet, and you'd be amused by Muggle!Snape (and living-as-a-Muggle!Draco) in "Semantics". If you have a little time to read, I'd start with those.
